Search for free field service software and most of what comes back is a free trial: 14 days, then a bill. That's fine if you're ready to pay. It's not much help if you're one person with a van, a phone and a stack of paper invoices, trying to get organized before you can afford another monthly subscription.
A handful of tools do have plans that stay free. Each one has a catch: one user, 30 jobs a month, no invoices, or no schedule. The trick is picking the catch you can live with.
This guide lists seven field service and job management tools with real free plans, what each free plan includes and leaves out, and the popular tools that only offer trials. We make Clevra, so it's listed first. Its free plan has limits too, and we'll spell them out.
Plans and prices were checked on each company's own site on October 28, 2026.
A free plan stays free until you choose to upgrade. A free trial ends on a date, and then you pay or lose access. Jobber, Housecall Pro, Workiz and Kickserv only offer trials. Joist used to have a free plan and ended it in 2024.
When a free plan is the deal you're after, check three things before you load in your customers: how many users it allows, how many jobs or invoices a month, and what the first paid plan costs when you outgrow it.
Clevra is field service software for trade crews of 1 to 15 people, and its Free plan runs the whole job for a solo operator. A homeowner fills in your request form; you send an estimate they approve online; the approved estimate becomes a job on your calendar; and when the furnace is running again, you Generate Invoice and they pay by card from the link.
What's included: one user, unlimited customers, a CRM with notes and multiple properties per client, estimates, scheduling and dispatch, invoices, Stripe card payments with no Clevra platform fee, a client portal, timesheets and a sales pipeline. Email reminders go to clients the day before a visit. There's no time limit and no card needed to sign up.
What's not: Clevra branding appears on your estimates, invoices and portal. Checklists and inspection reports, texts to clients, QuickBooks, automations, advanced reports and AI features start on Pro. The free plan is one user, so the day you hire, you move to Pro at $49 a month ($39 billed yearly) for up to 5 users, or Business at $99 ($79 yearly) for up to 15.

Where Clevra falls short. The Technician app is an iOS beta that can't take photos or payments yet, and there's no Android app. There's no Tap to Pay, ACH, online self-booking or GPS. Card payments are in US dollars only. Every new account can try Pro or Business free for 14 days before settling on a plan (compare plans).
ServiceM8 is a polished, iPhone-first job management app from Australia, available in the US since 2016. Its free plan is for sole operators: 1 user and 30 jobs a month, with scheduling, estimates, invoicing, payments, recurring jobs and the mobile app. Texts cost 10¢ each.
Forms, job costing and asset management need a paid plan. Paid plans have unlimited users and are priced by jobs, from $29 a month for 50 jobs. See our ServiceM8 alternatives guide.
Zoho's field service app has a free edition that allows up to 20 users, which is unusual. The limit is volume: 30 appointments and 30 invoices a month, and 1 GB of storage. It covers work orders, invoicing, payments and a mobile app for techs.
The calendar view, job costing and offline access are on paid plans, starting with Standard at $30 a month. It's a reasonable pick if you already use other Zoho apps.
Connecteam's Small Business plan is free for up to 10 users, with a GPS time clock, a schedule, unlimited forms and team chat. For a crew that mainly needs to know who's working where, it's hard to beat.
It doesn't send estimates or invoices or take customer payments, so you'd pair it with another app for the money side. Paid hubs start at $29 a month billed yearly. See our Connecteam alternatives guide.
Square Invoices sends unlimited invoices, estimates and contracts for free, with deposits, reminders and e-signatures. You pay per transaction: 3.3% + 30¢ for online cards on the free plan.
There's no job schedule or crew calendar, and it isn't built for trades. If you already take payments with Square and keep your schedule elsewhere, it's a simple free option. Plus is $20 a month and lowers the card rate.
Contractor+ is an all-in-one app for build and service contractors. Its free Freedom plan holds 250 leads and clients and lets you send 5 estimates or invoices a month, which is enough to try it on real jobs.
Scheduling and most other features sit on paid plans, from Pro Team at $58 a month for 2 users. See Clevra vs Contractor+.
MaintainX is work order software for maintenance and facilities teams, now part of Autodesk. Basic is free forever with unlimited work orders, though only 2 can have attached procedures, 2 can repeat, and you get 5 photos a month.
It has no estimates, invoices or customer payments, because it's built for an in-house maintenance team, not a business billing customers. For free work orders inside a building you manage, it's a strong choice.
There's no separate free "plumbing software" or "HVAC software" worth chasing. The free plans above work for any trade that books visits and bills for them. What changes by trade is the paperwork: a gas safety check, a backflow test, a panel inspection or a drain camera report.
If your trade sends a report after every job, check that the free plan can do it. Most can't: in Clevra and ServiceM8, forms and reports are paid features. See how Clevra is set up for plumbing, HVAC and electrical work.
Yes. Clevra, ServiceM8 and Zoho FSM all have free plans that never expire, each with limits: Clevra and ServiceM8 allow one user, and ServiceM8 and Zoho cap jobs or invoices each month.
For one person who wants estimates, scheduling, invoices and payments with no monthly cap on customers, Clevra Free. For a small team with light volume, Zoho FSM's free edition allows 20 users.
No. Jobber has a 14-day free trial, then plans start at $49 a month for one user billed monthly. It doesn't have a free plan.
For an in-house maintenance team, MaintainX Basic. For a trade business that turns work orders into invoices, Clevra Free or Zoho FSM's free edition.
Clevra's free plan includes a calendar with day, week and month views, a map and reminders to clients. Connecteam's free plan includes a crew schedule for up to 10 users, but no invoicing.
It's one user, and Clevra branding shows on your estimates, invoices and portal. Checklists, inspection reports, texts, QuickBooks and AI start on Pro at $49 a month for up to 5 users.
Add your customers, send your next estimate, book the job and get paid, all on Clevra's Free plan. When you're ready for a crew, try Pro or Business free for 14 days, no card.

You run a crew, not a tech company. Clevra handles the office stuff so you can stay on the tools.
